Montmartre
Soaring above Haussman's flattened city; the hill of Montmartre has a long
and bloody history. The Romans decapitated Saint Denis here in 272. Legend
has it that he and two other martyred bishop picked up their heads and carried
them to their final resting point; 7 km away; where the Eglise Saint-Denis
now stands -thus Montmartre (hill of the Martyrs). Until the 19th century;
it remained a farming area; covered with vineyards and wheat fields. The
last of these vineyards is still operational. After the commune; the narrow
streets and shape corners of Montmartre attracted notable bohemians such
as Charpentier; Toulouse Lautrec; and Satie; and performers such as « La
Goulue » and Aristide Bruant Today Montmartre is home to the Place du Tertre
renowned for its artists. Visit the Place du Tertre in the early morning
when it relates best an image of a small village square. Towards noon and
in the afternoon it is thronged with tourists. Today; should you wish your
portrait or caricature taken; the Place du Tertre will offer you a large
artistic choice. The paintings on display are commercial; but Montmartre
retains its bohemian style and a painting just might suit you as a souvenir.
The testimony of a country's artistic richness is often witnessed in its
cemeteries where repose those whose talents and careers contributed to its
greatness. The Montmartre cemeteries contain the graves of very many of
France's authors; artistic; theatrical and cinematic celebrities; as those
of Guitry; Zola; Berlioz; Truffaut; Degas; Offenbach; Nijinsky; Stendahl.
Place du Tertre is an haven attracted by the poetry clubs; the cafe-concerts
(coffeehouses with musicians and singers) and the gaiety of its night life.
Pigalle
Only a few blocks south-west of the tranquil; residential streets of Montmartre
is lively Pigalle; one of Paris's two major sex districts. But Pigalle
is more than simply a sleazy red-light district : though the area around
boulevard de Clichy between the Pigalle and Blanche metro stops is lined
with neon-lit porn shops and striptease parlous; there are also plenty
of trendy nightspots; including several all-night cafes and La Locomotive
disco. The famous Moulin Rouge cabaret restaurant is nearby. It offers
you shows every night. Enjoy yourself !
